What to expect from the PDF

Each worksheet starts on its own landscape page, titled with the sheet name, and its cells are drawn as a bordered grid with a repeating header row. Values are printed exactly as the workbook saved them — formulas are never recalculated. Charts, pictures, cell colours, number formats and merged cells are not carried over yet.

How your file is handled

Unlike our PDF and image tools, Excel to PDF runs on our server, so the document leaves your device. Your file is converted in memory and never written to storage. Only the PDF is kept privately for up to an hour so you can download it, then deleted. No document text is stored or logged; the only name kept is the download name for your result, which is deleted with it.

About excel to pdf

Convert an .xlsx workbook into a landscape PDF you can send or print without Excel. Every worksheet starts on its own page, titled with the sheet name, and its cells are drawn as a real bordered grid with the first row as a header that repeats on every following page. Values are shown exactly as the workbook stores them: a formula's saved result is used, never recalculated, and dates kept as serial numbers appear as those numbers rather than a guessed format. Charts, pictures, conditional formatting, cell colours, merged cells and print areas are not carried over yet, and older .xls files must be saved as .xlsx first. The file is uploaded over HTTPS, converted in memory, never stored, and the PDF is held privately for up to an hour so you can download it, then deleted.

How it works

  1. 1Sign in to your free account, then choose an .xlsx of up to 25 MB. The file is uploaded over HTTPS.
  2. 2We read each worksheet's cells and draw them as a bordered table on landscape pages, one sheet at a time.
  3. 3The PDF is checked for validity before it's offered, then downloaded through a short-lived private link.

Frequently asked questions

Are my formulas recalculated?
No. We print the result your spreadsheet already saved with the file, exactly as it stands. Nothing is recomputed, so the PDF can never disagree with what you last saw in Excel.
What happens to charts, colours and formatting?
They aren't carried over yet. You get the values in a clean bordered grid with a bold header row. Number formats, cell colours, conditional formatting, merged cells and charts are not reproduced, so this is a data print-out rather than a visual copy of the sheet.
How wide a sheet can it handle?
Pages are landscape and columns are sized to their content, up to 40 columns per sheet. Beyond that the text in a cell is trimmed with an ellipsis rather than spilling over a neighbour. Very large workbooks are limited to 40 worksheets and 5,000 rows per sheet.
Why are my dates showing as numbers?
Excel stores many dates as a plain serial number plus a display format. We only carry over what the file states, and guessing the wrong format would change what your sheet says. Formatting the column as text in Excel before converting gives you the dates exactly as you want them.
Is my file uploaded?
Yes — reading a workbook reliably needs a server, so the file is uploaded over HTTPS. It is converted in memory and never written to storage; only the PDF is held privately for up to an hour so you can download it, then deleted.
