About wav to mp3

Shrink a WAV recording into an MP3 you can email, upload or fit on a phone. Your browser decodes the WAV and a real LAME encoder — running in the page, not on a server — writes the MP3 at 128, 192 or 320 kbps. 192 kbps is a good default for music and speech; 320 kbps keeps the most detail; 128 kbps gives the smallest file. The original sample rate is preserved, mono stays mono, and multi-channel recordings are mixed down to stereo, which is what MP3 supports. Nothing is uploaded: the recording and the finished MP3 both stay on your device.

How it works

  1. 1Choose one or more WAV files, up to 100 MB each.
  2. 2Pick the bitrate: 128, 192 or 320 kbps.
  3. 3Your browser decodes the WAV and encodes the MP3 locally.
  4. 4Download the MP3 files, one at a time or all together.

Frequently asked questions

Is my recording uploaded anywhere?
No. Decoding and MP3 encoding both happen inside your browser, so the audio never leaves your device.
Which bitrate should I choose?
192 kbps suits most music and speech and is the default. Choose 320 kbps when you want the closest thing to the original, and 128 kbps when a small file matters more than fine detail.
Is MP3 lossy?
Yes. MP3 permanently discards some audio to save space — that is how it becomes small. Keep your WAV if you plan to edit further, and use the MP3 for sharing and listening.
Is the sample rate changed?
No. The MP3 keeps the WAV's own sample rate. Mono files stay mono; surround recordings are mixed down to stereo because MP3 does not carry more than two channels here.
Which WAV files are supported?
Standard PCM WAV files, including 16-bit, 24-bit and 32-bit float, as read by your browser's audio engine. An unusual or damaged file is refused with a clear message rather than half-converted.
Why is there a file-size limit?
The whole recording is decoded into memory before encoding. Registered users can add files up to 100 MB, which keeps the tool dependable on phones as well as laptops.
